Black Friday Post Game Wrap-up
Nov. 30th, 2010 01:50 pmAh, what a crazy month it's been. And it's already gone, geez! The last post was about starting Nanowrimo and now it's over. And of course, I did nothing. Daniel and Deanne made some comments about it and I spiraled into my self-defeatist "Everything I do is crap, so why bother to do anything at all" mode and then got behind and just sort of self-destructed. Of course that all coincided with the Socorro trip which just kind of went to hell as a result. Bah.
Anyhow, shopping! The only thing in life that I am actually good at. I love Black Friday, ya'll. Seriously. Anticipate so much and I am once again pleased with the results. I wasn't going to bother with Walmart at all, but George wanted to check out the cheap video games at midnight and despite planning on getting up at 3:30am that...night/day, I couldn't resist the siren's call. Daniel ended up going with us and it was CRAZY. The electronics didn't even start til 5am, but people were out in full force and cattle-herded into two lines around the giant boxes of discounts in the middle of the aisles. We didn't even find most of the video games, but I grabbed a bunch of Batman/Justice League dvds for 1.96, some down pillows for $7 and...actually I think that's it. Daniel got dvds, shaver, controller and pillow and George just some dvds I believe. He and I were ready to just bail on our stuff once we got to the crazy long lines, but Daniel made us tough it out and we did survive, though with very little sanity and patience in tact. Got home about 1:30, but didn't fall asleep til 2am.
So an hour and a half later, I'm up to go to Target. This was my Big Purchase and the one thing I wanted most. It was finally time for me to get an Xbox 360. They had by far the best deal. For the $199 4GB system, you got a $50 gift card, plus another $10 one for spending over $100 in store that day. Plus, you get 5% off when using your Target charge card which Mom let me borrow hers since I lost mine long ago. There were some hinks in my plan though. I had been hoping that since Walmart was undercutting everyone on the big electronics, people would choose to wait there until 5am, especially since you could do so inside the store what with the 24-hour thing. I should mention that in the days prior to this it had still been 80 degrees out, but that Thursday night, temperatures suddenly plummeted to 12 degrees. >_>
But nope, there were a ton of people wanting electronics and NO fucking organization. There were cops standing by that did nothing, 2 people cashiering back there and a few floaters, but no set lines, nothing organized like "go here for video games, there for laptops/cameras" just people mobbing the counter and the tallest/loudest that could keep the cashier's attention got their way. Some systems were in this cage that no one had the key for, some were on the floor, some were in some other mystical place, it was just pure fucking mess. I'm still not quite sure how, but somehow between me and Mom, I ended up with a box in my hands and I did get what I had come for that day. Paid for that, was going to get a few other smaller things that we ended up abandoning when we saw the lines, though.
Thankfully, though, the rest of the morning went really well. All the store openings were staggered perfectly so that by the time we left one sale, it was just a short wait for the next one and nowhere else even came close to the first two in terms of difficulty. Sadly, Kmart seems to be the only one that has actually learned from past Black Fridays and tried to put a system in place. One neat line on the side of the building, a table with coffee and cocoa at the front, employees with clipboards and vouchers to guarantee you the electronics you wanted flanking the line and pleasantly offering them to everyone. Very nice. So Kudos Kmart! And since everyone was in the electronics, I got everything there quickly, no wait in line and the thing that was not on sale, I was able to immediately return and get my money back. Wow.
So what else did I end up with? Just about everything I set out for that I wanted. We ended up going back to Target later that morning and I got one of my tiny LPS Blythes, but the other had disappeared. Had to wait til the next day for Vampire Diaries, but there was ONE left Saturday morning, woo!
Got Assassin's Creed, DoA 4 and Lost at Gamestop for my new 360. A $5 cat bed at Westlake. The first 2 volumes of American Dad for $10 at Hastings oh and Lie to Me, which I had previously ditched at Walmart. My favoritest new coat at Kmart. Apparently no one cared about anything BUT electronics there, since there was only 4 available in one of each size and it was an $80 peacoat for $20, but they were untouched and it has pockets and I am super in love with it. Got the Fashionista Barbie with the tiny top hat for five bucks. Ended up stopping at Walgreens just to kill time since they had no ad, but turns out they had Monster High dolls so I got Hyde finally, though not on sale unfortunately. Let's see, I've since ordered more under $10 360 games thanks to Hastings Cybermonday discount and I'm getting the American Girl llama and an outfit and shoes. Even got some Christmas present shopping done.
So all in all, another successful Black Friday. Yay!

Date: 2010-12-01 03:37 am (UTC)I tremble in fear of such things and always hide in my house on that day.
Just never could deal with shopping mobs.
I'm going to be in Roswell for Christmas. Not sure how that's going to work with the old house having electricity & heat all shut off. Have you got a guest bedroom yet? lol. But whereever I'm staying, I'm looking forward to hanging out with you if you've got time. :D
