Could this town be any dumber?

I was watching the news to see if our library porn meeting was going to be featured, but instead I saw something even more irritating. The 2010 census is coming up, yes? Well, last time we barely missed 50,000 people. Now a lot of stores and restaurants will only come into a town with a population of 50,000, but apparently that number also nets you more federal funding.

So, what does Roswell figure out from this? That also means more funding for a bigger police force. Makes sense right? More police for more people? Well apparently, people are actually going to boycott the census to keep the police from getting money. Why the hell would they want to do this?

Because apparently, the police target Hispanics and illegal immigrants.

Okay, first off, the racial majority in this town is Hispanic. I, as a white person, qualify as a minority here. Seriously. So yes, of course more of the criminals are going to be hispanic because that's just how the numbers play out. Plus, most of the gang activity is hispanic-related. I'm sorry, but it is.

As for the second...HELLO, IT HAS THE WORD ILLEGAL RIGHT IN THE DESCRIPTION. That's their job!! To get rid of illegal activities! Illegal means against US law! As a US citizen you're expected to uphold these laws! Shocking, I know! I realize that businesses hire the undocumented workers here, but if you really want to help them, get them to be legal citizens instead of taking out the police force! How does that even make sense?? And like the mayor said, that's not even a city task! INS is a federal agency and only they can actually deport people! And they're here and using our resources already! So why not count them so we can at least get the extra money that y'know they're using, too?! Gah, it just boggles the mind!!

I'm already pissed, because the stupid county people won't incorporate themselves just so they won't have to pay city taxes on things they use anyway, like all the roads in town, the schools, THE LIBRARY, etc and then this...it's just astounding. I want decent stores and restaurants, dammit! Don't blow this you stupid people!! It would also be nice to feel safe in my own city! The Library's constantly marked up with gang crap all over the bathrooms and scraps of paper and we need LESS police going after these people??

I'm just...so livid right now. I suppose the upside is that it's replaced the anger I was feeling over the stupid Internet porn controversy we've been having, though I'm sure you'll be hearing about that later from me or Robert... *>_<*

Whateveeerrrr. The police aren't going to do anything to people leading decent lives. I doubt they're gonna go round up Mr. Man with three kids who works for a living before the crazy gangbangers vandalizing a 7-11.

That sucks. I don't see how you can boycott a census though. They're sort of, ah, required.

Exactly. And if ya'll don't want cases of mistaken identity, quit dressing and acting like gangbangers! It's not a hispanic thing, it's a looking-like-a-criminal thing.

Well, I guess they intend to count the illegals in the census, but if they don't have documentation they won't know they're there? I don't know, really. This town sometimes...*shakes head*

What exactly do you mean by "the stupid county people won't incorporate themselves" bit? They'll be counted in the census regardless of whether they are living in city lines or not. The census does take into account the outlying populations. I remember the census folks very clearly coming out to pester my parents & neighbors. And you know how far my parents live out.

If your referring instead to turning down annexation. I remember that last time the city wanted to annex county populations and there whole argument was "we get to tax you but we won't use it to improve the infrastructure or anything else a city should be obligated to do. ha ha screw you country bumpkins!". OF course we stupid county people said no to that. I understand we use buildings/roads in the city but there is a thing called SALES TAX for that very reason.

As for the arguments against helping the police. Your right on, that's just stupid reasoning. An underfunded police department is even more likely to turn to stupid ideas like racial profiling to make up for lack of proper training/equipment.

Yeah... I honestly don't regret moving away from that town.

Not you guys. :P You have legit reason to be out there with your farming and self-sustinence and whatnot. I'm talking about those people who move just to the edge of town to "get away from everything" or just to dodge taxes, and yet still want all the benefits of living in a city handed to them. Trying to have it both ways, as it were.

I'm not sure how people who move to the edge of town dodge taxes. You still have to pay property tax just like those who live in town, and it's not any cheaper living outside of town than it is in town. Now, if you are a business on the edge of town, that's a different story. I don't think that you have to have the same liscensing to run a business outside of city limits.
